After several rain/lightning delays ending in cancellation of all Saturday games, our U12 Purple Fusion team soared back to the field on Sunday to take first in the Nike Classic Cup in Schaumburg, IL.
With their mud-caked cleats and soggy shin guards they beat the Minnesota Thunder 2-1 after a tie-breaking shootout. CONGRATULATIONS FUSION!!!

Left to Right Row 1: Emily Morgan, Sonya Bright, Megan Frueh, Molly Jaeger, Taylor Lovick Row 2: Ellie Cahill, Allyson Malone, Rachel Anderson, Cassidy Johnson, Sara Bichler, Jordan Haag, Courtney Westover, Tess Lemcke Row 3: Coach Pete Treinen, Coach Kurt Kliminski Verona, WI- April 19, 2009- The Waunakee Wild U11 Girls started their season off with a bang by being the Champions for their division at the Reddan Spring Shootout. The Wild started the tournament on Friday facing the Yahara Black Thunder. Thanks to a rifle shot of a goal by Taylor Lovick, the team won in a shut-out victory, 1-0. Coach Pete Treinen said, “the girls have worked hard in the off-season and it is nice to see them come together as a team.”
Saturday started in a match against the Madison Regent Lynx. The Wild took control early on and scored two goals. The first was a targeted goal by Jordan Haag to the near post where it was beyond the goalieʼs reach. The second was a power kick by Rachel Anderson that proved too fast for the goalie to react. The Lynx were unable to score thanks to the quick reflexes of the Wildʼs goalkeeper, Megan Frueh.
Later that day, it was the Baraboo Flameʼs turn to face the Wild. The Flameʼs came out aggressive and scored one early goal. The Wild didnʼt let this phase them and answered with a goal by Courtney Westover. Midway through the second half, Taylor Lovick scored the go ahead goal. Thanks to the efforts of the Wildʼs defense, the Flames were unable to answer and the Wild won 2-1.
Sunday, cool weather met the Wild but that didnʼt seem to phase the team as they squared off against the Verona Sirens. Courtney Westover went far post to score the first goal. Shortly after that, Taylor Lovick blasted the ball past the goalie to put an exclamation mark on the tournament. The Wild won in another shutout.
This tournament marks the start of the Wild's season. They have eight games and two tournaments ahead of them. Coach Kurt Kliminski said, “This looks to be a very promising season for the Wild.”
